The Question Beneath Our Questions
Get this one right and everything else follows
Who are you?
That is THE question. The keystone in the arch - the prime mover across every aspect of our lives. Our answer to that question makes most other questions - and stated answers - unnecessary.
So... who are you? (Who am I?)
Not what do you do... or where do you live... or what is your title... or your current 10K time ;-). Who are you?
This keystone catalyst - for better or worse - interprets our past, guides our present and determines our future. Once we’re clear about our identity, choices become easy, decisions simplified, and goals essentially achieve themselves.
That’s the problem, isn’t it? As we move into and through life’s second half, our identity, which once may have felt clear, becomes blurry. Or perhaps the reality is we never had a true identity. Maybe we spent the first half of our lives wearing the “what’s” (titles, degrees, accomplishments, etc) and never getting to the “who.” Now, as the protective shell of whats is shed, we naturally wonder what will be revealed inside.
Or... maybe the “problem” isn’t a problem at all? Maybe this emergence from the shell IS the opportunity - for the first time in our life - to explore, to fully realize who we are - our true identity.
And yet, the cracks - whether professional cliffs, athletic injuries, relationship changes, or any of life’s left turns - can be painful. The potential growth that follows involves a combination of scanning and shaping, a mix of tuning into who we’ve always been at our core and forming that identity going forward. Our words - critical vs. curious, aging vs. active, fine vs. fluid - matter. They don’t simply reflect who we “are.” They determine the flow in who we’re becoming.
And that flow provides the fuel for a life worth living, a legacy worth building, because we’re not... done... yet!

the interesting thing about the "who" question is -- how complicated do we need to make it?
1. I am age/race/job/hobby/car/house/diet/travel/family/politics/religion/etc.
2. I am a scout. warrior. builder. leader. etc.
3. I am part of nature
